What a year it has been for world No.1 Swiatek who went on a 37-match winning streak between the end of the Australian Open (losing in the semi-final) and the third round Wimbledon, winning the French Open along the way. The Polish superstar had a fairly routine start to the 2022 US Open, beating Jasmine Paolini, Sloane Stephens and Lauren Davis without dropping a single set.
That run was ended in the fourth round as Swiatek had to recover from one set down to beat Jule Niemeier but that victory did include a bagel in the final set. In the quarter-finals Swiatek beat American Jessica Pegula in straight sets, ending any chance of a home win at the US Open. There was another dropped set in the semi-finals against Aryna Sabalenka but again Swiatek recovered to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and reach her first ever US Open final.
Jabeur, meanwhile, has been building on her run to the Wimbledon final and will be hoping to take that final step to claim her first Open crown. The Tunisian was beaten in three sets by Elena Rybakina in London in July and did not have the best of runs in her US Open warm up events, but she bounced back with a bang. Like Swiatek, Jabeur didn’t drop a set in her first two wins over Madison Brengle and Elizabeth Mandlik, but in the third round had to come from a set down to beat Shelby Rogers – a hat-trick of wins over Americans.
But Jabeur hasn’t dropped a set since. In the fourth round Jabeur returned to her more clinical state, beating Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets and there was a similar result against Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals. Then, last time out in the semi-finals, there was a pretty routine 6-1, 6-3 victory over Caroline Garcia to secure back-to-back Open finals for Jabeur.
