All eyes will be on Iga Swiatek as she attempts to create history. The world No 1 currently holds two of the four slams — French Open and US Open — and will become the first woman in eight years to hold three if she wins in Melbourne. A year ago, Swiatek reached her first hard-court Grand Slam semifinal, but would fall at this hurdle to Danielle Collins though Swiatek would go on to enjoy a memorable 2022 and when it comes first round at the Aussie Open her record is 4-0. In fact, the Pole has made at least the round of 16 on her last three visits. Having won eight titles in the past 12 months, she’s the bookmaker’s favourite to win this year’s tournament.

Form or momentum isn’t on Jule Niemeier’s side heading into the first slam of this year. She’s failed to win a set or more than seven games in her three previous matches in the 2023 season. Last year Niemeier was ranked 133rd and crashed out of the qualifiers. Since then Niemeier has broken into the top 100 due largely to a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon and a fourth-round exit at the US Open (courtesy of Swiatek 2-6, 6-4, 6-0). In fact, Niemeier hadn’t won a tour-level main draw match on hard courts until last year’s US Open.

Scoreline prediction: Iga Swiatek 2-0 Jule Niemeier
