Formula 1 heads to the Hungaroring this weekend as Max Verstappen aims to extend his lead at the top of the Championship.

The defending champion banked 25 points to pull further clear of Charles Leclerc, who crashed out from the front after putting his Ferrari on pole.

It was a positive afternoon for Mercedes, though, with Lewis Hamilton followed home by team-mate George Russell as they shared the podium for the first time this season.

Hamilton will be chasing a fifth straight podium in Budapest as the constructors’ champions continue their upward trajectory.

Race prediction: Hungaroring suits Ferrari

Charles Leclerc has shown he and his Ferrari can do it over one lap this season, with the Monegasque claiming seven of 12 pole positions so far in 2022. But Leclerc’s trouble has been in converting those into race wins — failing to beat his rivals to the flag on each of the last five occasions he has started from the front.

In Hungary, he can go some way to putting that record right. If Leclerc can hook up a lap in qualifying, as he has done so reliably thus far in 2022, it will surely set Ferrari up for a dominant weekend (providing the engine plays ball). The high downforce Hungaroring plays beautifully to Ferrari’s strength and gives them an immediate shot at wiping out the ground lost to Red Bull in France on Sunday. Mattia Binotto will certainly have his eyes fixed on locking out the front row.

After his unforced error in France, Leclerc has now retired from the lead three times this season and his garage will know he must start eating into Max Verstappen’s 63-point lead sooner rather than later. You sense Leclerc needs this victory in favourable conditions to help bat away doubts, both personal and external, over his ability to contain the pressure and keep pace with his chief title rival.

Elsewhere, expect Alpine to deliver another strong showing at a circuit where Esteban Ocon scored a shock race win in 2021. The team picked up 37 points — 24 per cent of their entire season points tally — after Valtteri Bottas caused a first-lap crash which prematurely ruled out a number of front-runners.
