Spurs must put Champions League final defeat to Liverpool behind them, says Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris says the club must move on from their Champions League final defeat to Liverpool last season.

A remarkable comeback win over Ajax in the semi-finals sealed Spurs’ place in a first-ever Champions League final.

However, with Harry Kane still struggling with fitness after an injury sustained in the quarter-finals against Manchester City, Spurs were unable to seriously test Jurgen Klopp’s side, going down 2-0 in Madrid.

But Lloris has urged everyone at the club to move on from that experience and focus on the season ahead.

“It’s part of football, we need to move on,” he said. “It’s a new season and with plenty of new challenges. You have to look ahead because if we look behind us for sure we will lose the focus on the season.

“I feel quite comfortable, all the team is focused in the sessions and we have done some good things during pre-season in terms of performances. Now we have one week to go and it’s important to keep the focus and be ready to get the three points to start the season in the best way.”

After a number of delays kept them at Wembley, Spurs finally managed to move into their new home in north London toward the back end of last season, playing eight competitive games there in all competitions.

And with a first full season in their impressive stadium to come, Lloris has called upon his teammates to raise the bar to ensure the fans are able to get behind Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“The good thing is we are going to start the season in our new stadium and this has to be a help and a big boost for us with our fans behind us,” the Frenchman added.

“This stadium has to be a difficult place for any opponent, in the Premier League and Champions League and it belongs to the players to make it special. For sure the crowd will follow, but the main actors and protagonists are the players and it belongs to us to put in the good energy.”

Lloris reveals Spurs target

Despite the defeat, reaching the Champions League final was a monumental achievement for Spurs and Lloris believes the target must now be to go on and reach even higher levels in the forthcoming campaign.

“The target is to get better season after season and it’s going to be difficult to do better in the Champions League, but we believe everything is possible,” he said. “In the Premier League, to reduce the gap with the best, but the main thing is to still get in the top four. That’s the main target and then if we can do better, we will try to do better, but I think it’s a very exciting season ahead of us in the most competitive league in the world.”
