At the Canadian Open in August, Hurkacz reached his second ever Masters final and had been looking to extend his perfect record, but had his dreams shattered in three sets by Pablo Carreno Busta. Since that defeat, as well as exiting the US Open at the second round, Hurkacz suffered an early defeat in the Cincinnati Masters but does have two semi-final appearances in the Moselle Open and Astana Open.
Hurkacz is the fifth seed for the Vienna Open and started the tournament against American France Tiafoe, needing three sets to beat his opponent 7-6 (9) 3-6 6-3. The Pole needed three sets again in the second round, this time against special exempt entry Emil Ruusuvuori, winning 7-5 4-6 6-3.
Corin has struggled this year with a shoulder injury but appears to have got past the problems and has built a good run of tournaments post-Wimbledon. One of those tournaments was the Cincinnati Masters which he won, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the final, while he also reached the quarter-finals of the Japan Open.
In the first round of the Vienna Open, Coric went up against qualifier Quentin Hayls but needed to come from a set down to beat the Frenchman, eventually winning 3-6 7-5 6-3. It was another three set victory in the second round, this time against second seed Tsitsipas in a repeat of the Cincinnati Masters final, with Coric taking an exciting final set to win 4-6 6-4 7-6 (4).
