Holger Rune and Casper Ruud will be hoping to make their mark in what is the more favourable side of the 2023 French Open when they meet in the quarter-finals this week. Whoever wins this match will face either Alexander Zverev or Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the semi-finals and will no doubt be the favourite to reach the final — with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic on the other side.
Ruud is the higher seed at the French Open, coming in at fourth and did make it all the way to the final last year, only losing to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal. It was the first of two Grand Slam final appearances for Ruud last year, but again his showing at the US Open ended in defeat to Alcaraz.
At the Australian Open earlier this year, Ruud suffered a second-round exit but it has been pretty smooth at Roland Garros so far with the Norwegian dropping just two sets in his four matches. Yet to face a seeded player, Ruud beat Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5 last time out to seal his quarter-final spot.
Rune, meanwhile, is in the quarter-finals of the French Open for the second time in what is just his second appearance at Roland Garros, bursting onto the scene in late 2021. Slowly making his way up the rankings, the Dane is already among the best in the world and won the Paris Masters last year, as well as reaching the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters and Italian Open in 2023.
Now, Rune is looking to make it to the semi-final of a Grand Slam for the first time though it hasn’t been smooth sailing at Roland Garros. Wins over Christopher Eubanks and Genaro Alberto Olivieri as well as a walkover against Gael Monfils sent Rune to the fourth round, where he had to win a fifth-set tiebreak to beat 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo, having twice given up one-set leads.
