The winners of the previous two Masters events this season, Indian Wells and Miami, both eliminated Jannik Sinner en route to their victories. Holger Rune, a former Boys’ French Open champion, will be hoping to continue this trend. That being said, the talented Dane has experienced heartbreaking losses in almost every tournament he’s participated in 2023, but getting this far has made him only the third teenager, after Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, to make multiple appearances in Masters events finals on different surfaces. Plus, he is the first teen to play the final day in Monte Carlo since Nadal in 2006. Rune’s previous semifinal success also came in this part of the world. He defeated Felix Auger Aliassime in November 2022 at the Paris Masters before creating a major upset against Novak Djokovic to claim his first such title.
Only three Russian players have reached a Masters final on clay, with Andrei Chesnokov in 1990 being the sole success story. Rublev, a consistent top-10 player, hasn’t been able to win any title above the ATP 500 level. Twice before he’s competed for a Masters title but failed on both occasions: losing in straight sets against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo 2021 (3-6 3-6) and Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati 2021 (2-6 3-6). He made hard work of defeating Indian Wells Masters champion Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. After being unable to serve out the first set at 5-4 and dominating the second, he trailed the deciding third by an early break though ultimately coming out victorious, 5-7 6-1 6-3. Earlier this year, at the Australian Open round of 16, Rublev defeated Rune in five sets. It tied their head-to-head record at 1-1 after Rune’s 6-4 7-5 success in Paris 2022.
