Brazilian striker Joelinton is in “concrete negotiations” with a Premier League club, according to his current employers Hoffenheim.

Joelinton, who has been heavily linked with Newcastle United, was absent from the Hoffenheim squad for a friendly against Regensberg on Wednesday.

Who is Joelinton? Five key things to know…

  • Age: 22
  • Position: Centre-forward
  • Nation: Brazil
  • Career path: Sport Recife (2014-2015), Hoffenheim (2015–), Rapid Vienna (loan 2016-2018)
  • Key stat: Joelinton completed all 12 of his attempted take-ons in the Champions League group stages last season – the most by any player to maintain a 100% success rate.

Reports suggest Newcastle are set to sign Joelinton for £36m, which will mark the second time the Magpies have broken their transfer record this year.

Hoffenheim posted a video of the team coming out for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday via the club’s official Twitter account.

When a fan asked where the absent Joelinton was, Hoffenheim responded: “Joe is not there, he is in concrete negotiations with a Premier League club. It may be that he leaves us.”

Joelinton found the net 11 times across all competitions for Hoffenheim last season, including seven goals in 26 Bundesliga outings.

Newcastle broke their transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron for £21m from Atlanta United back in January but it seems Joelinton will cost significantly more than that.

The Brazilian looks set to become the first signing of the Steve Bruce era after the former Sheffield Wednesday manager was appointed Newcastle boss on Wednesday morning.
