AS Roma have signed Arsenal forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan on loan until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old Armenian star will join the Giallorossi after they agreed to cover the player’s wages for the duration of his stay.

Is Mkhitaryan’s time in England over? Five key things to know…

  • Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal in a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez last January
  • The Armenian had originally signed for United from Dortmund for £27m
  • He played 39 Premier League matches for both Man Utd and Arsenal
  • He did feature in the second half of the Gunners 2-2 draw with Spurs at the weekend
  • The 30-year-old has agreed a deal to join the Giallorossi on loan

Mkhitaryan is the latest player from the Premier League to make the switch to the Stadio Olympico on loan with Chris Smalling announced earlier this week and Davide Zappacosta arriving from Chelsea.

The Yerevan-born footballer is a hero in his country and came to prominence when playing for the Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk. He would score 38 times in 72 league games before making the move to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

He continued his upward trajectory with the Ruhr club and moved to Manchester United after two seasons at the Westfalenstadion.

His time in the Premier League has been less successful with first-team opportunities harder to come by. In just over three seasons in England, he has played 78 top-flight games with United and Arsenal, 12 less than he managed in the same timeframe with Dortmund.

The bank of Britain

This is not the first time Roma have looked to England for signings. The Giallorossi have developed a pattern of bringing in loan signings from the country with Smalling, Mkhitaryan and Davide Zappacosta the latest to be added to the ranks.

In recent season the Italian side have brought in Ashley Cole, Mohamed Salah, Edin Dzeko, Federico Fazio and Aleksander Kolarov from sides in the Premier League with a further two joining this season.

Roma have drawn their first two games of the new campaign after being held to a 3-3 draw in the opening weekend against Genoa and then settling on another stalemate in the Derby della Capitale in the 1-1 draw with Lazio.

They face Sassuolo after the international break and should have Zappacosta, Smalling and Mkhitaryan in the lineup.
