While Heather Watson is currently taking a lot of the headlines for reaching the Fourth Round of Wimbledon for the first ever time, there’s another Brit looking to join her. Boulter has taken part in the Wimbledon main draw on two previous occasions, making it to the Second Round in 2018 and 2021, but she has already bettered that in 2022.
Entering the tournament as a wildcard, the British No. 3 (World No. 118) started in the First Round against France’s Clara Burel, winning 7-5, 6-3 to keep up her 100% record of reaching the Second Round. But you could be forgiven for expecting Boulter’s Wimbledon to end there again, pit against sixth-seed Karolina Pliskova. Those thoughts will have increased after Pliskova took the first set, but Boulter fought back to win in excellent fashion, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Her opponent has had an excellent tournament so far too. Unseeded for the First Round, Tan was handed a wildcard opponent by the name of Serena Williams. That’s the most success tennis Grand Slam champion of all time, Serena Williams. With the crowd naturally edging towards Williams, Tan fought against the American and the crowd to win 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7), coming from 4-0 down in the final set tie break.
Ending Williams’ Wimbledon dreams earned Tan a Second Round match against Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo and it was a lot more straightforward for the Frenchwoman, winning 6-3, 6-4.
