The EuroCup is the second-tier competition of Euroleague Basketball and does offer a route to the EuroLeague for the winner and potentially the runners-up too, though that isn’t a guarantee. The regular season is split into two groups of 10, with teams playing each other home and away and the top eight teams from each group will reach the playoffs.
Hapoel Tel Aviv are back in the EuroCup for the first time since 2005/06, having spent a few years in the lower tiers of Israeli basketball and featuring twice in the Basketball Champions League (a FIBA-organised tournament). In the Israeli Basketball Premier League last season, Hapoel Tel Aviv made it to the quarterfinals before being beaten in four games by Maccabi Tel Aviv, after finishing top of the bottom-teams league group.
Their opponents this week are London Lions, first-team entries into the EuroCup with their only previous European experience coming in the Basketball Champions League and FIBA’s Europe Cup. In the BBL Championship last season, London Lions finished third in the regular season and made it all the way to the playoff final, losing to Leicester Riders at The O2 Arena in London.
This is also the first time a British team have been in the EuroCup since 2007, when Guildford Heat (now Surrey Scorchers) finishing bottom of their group without a win.
