Hamburg striker Jann-Fiete Arp has confirmed he will be joining Bayern Munich this summer.

Bayern announced the deal for the teenager in February 2019 but gave the player the option to either join this summer or at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Who is Jann-Fiete Arp? Five key things to know…

  1. Jann-Fiete Arp joined Hamburg as a 10-year-old, spending the last nine years at the club.
  2. The forward made his Bundesliga debut as a 17-year-old in September 2017.
  3. Full of promise, Arp had previously been linked a move to Chelsea before Bayern Munich confirmed his deal in February.
  4. And Arp will be a Bayern Munich player next season, after opting to move a year earlier.
  5. Arp has scored four goals in 38 senior games for Hamburg in his career.

Arp has been a bit-part player for Hamburg in the 2. Bundesliga this season, starting in just five of his 12 league appearances and scoring once.

That goal came on what will prove to be his final Hamburg appearance, netting in a 3-0 win over MSV Duisberg, though it was not enough to take the club into the play-off spot.

And, writing on his Instagram account after the match, Arp confirmed his imminent departure, thanking the Hamburg fans for their support.

“Dear HSV family,” he wrote. “After nine years it is time to say goodbye. Today, coupled with the last weeks or the entire season is symbolic of my time in this big club.

“We celebrated, we suffered, laughed and cried … but one thing above all: We have always found a way to stand up against all the blabber and say ‘HSV anyway’.

“That’s also what drove me to spend nine years here, sharing my emotions with you almost every second, because I’ve always known everyone feels just like me.

“Stay strong HSVer, this club will always remain special and though ‘times are often difficult’ the success will find its way back to Hamburg.

“Ensure that every player, every employee and every tourist who enters our grounds is carried away by your love, every human soul continues to show how awesome this club is.

“I will miss every single one of this club and I am more than proud to be part of HSV for nine years.

“Of course, the next huge challenge is waiting for me, but I will always be part of you, as you will always be part of me.

“I hope through the enormous love you have given, strengthens me to go to FC Bayern Munich to show that Hamburg guys can convince even the biggest and be successful.

“Just thank you, thank you for everything, thanks for the training, for the opening of the door to the professional area, for the enormous support & above all thank you for your love.

“I am sorry not to have given you the gift for which I extended my time here & I am sorry to not have given you more.

“I wish the HSV a bright future, the promotion in the upcoming season and above all, to be a club that stands for the things that have always made it!

“In Hamburg we say goodbye, see you again soon.”

Bayern’s new era

Though Arp is unlikely to go straight into the first-team, his arrival marks the beginning of a new era for Bayern Munich.

Despite winning a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title, Bayern have come under criticism for their ageing squad and look set to make appropriate changes this summer.

Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben have already confirmed their imminent departures, while 23-year-old Lucas Hernandez’s arrival this summer will add a younger look to the back line. The club are also reported to still be interested in Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, though the 18-year-old’s Achilles injury has thrown a move into doubt.
