Guatemala vs Mexico build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Gold Cup winners in 1967, Guatemala have failed to make it beyond the group stages of this competition in six of their last eight appearances. If they’re to do so this time, they’re going to need to pull off a massive shock against Mexico after losing their opening match 2-0 against El Salvador.
But El Tri might well come into this match with all guns blazing after drawing 0-0 with Trinidad and Tobago on matchday one. Despite attempting 30 shots, Tata Martino’s men managed just seven on target and were unable to make their 83% domination of possession count for much. Though another draw wouldn’t be disastrous in terms of progression to the knockout rounds, it would show further signs of weakness to the other Gold Cup contenders.
- Guatemala (vs El Salvador): Hagen; Gordillo, Pinto, Hernandez; Robles, Aparicio, Dominguez, Morales Concua; Ceballos, Martinez, Arreola.
- Mexico (vs Trinidad & Tobago): Talavera; Rodriguez, Araujo, Salcedo, Rodriguez; Herrera, Alvarez, Gutierrez; Corona, Funes Mori, Lozano*.
Guatemala have a fully fit squad to choose from for this game but Mexico are without Hirving Lozano for the entire tournament after he suffered a head injury just 10 minutes into their opening match.

Player to watch: Hector Herrera (Mexico)
Mexico might have failed to find the net against Trinidad and Tobago but that wasn’t for the want of trying on the part of Hector Herrera. The Atletico Madrid midfielder created no fewer than eight chances across the 90 minutes, while he completed 102 passes at a rate of 91% and rattled the post with a brilliant effort in the first half.
El Tri need to get moving quickly if they’re to make a serious fist of retaining their Gold Cup title but if Herrera can turn in another attacking performance like this from the heart of the midfield, they should have no problems against Guatemala.
