Pep Guardiola has admitted Leroy Sane’s future at Manchester City is “out of his hands”.
The German winger has made 134 appearances across all competitions and won two Premier League titles since moving to the Etihad in 2016 but has become unsettled in recent months.
Could Sane leave Man City for Bayern? Five things to know…
- Sane joined Man City in 2016 and has won two Premier League titles so far.
- Despite his success, he’s appeared unsettled in recent months, being linked with Bayern Munich.
- Sane was reportedly set for a switch before suffered an ACL injury in August, shelving a deal.
- But Bayern look set to bid again and Guardiola admits Sane’s future is “out of his hands”.
- Sane has scored 39 goals in 134 appearances across all competitions for City.
Sane was heavily linked with a switch to Bayern Munich over the summer, although the Bundesliga champions’ hopes of agreeing a deal were ended when he picked up an ACL injury in City’s Community Shield win over Liverpool in August.
The 23-year-old is nearing a return to fitness but doubts remain regarding his future at the club — something Guardiola admits he has little control over.
“I know him well,” the Spaniard told reporters at a press conference. “I was the guy who pushed for him to come here even though he didn’t play regularly for Schalke.

“I cannot do anything else. He is a nice guy but I just want him to come back fit – his knee looks good – after that, it is none of my business.
“What he does is not in my hands.”
Sane’s contract runs until 2021 with City’s attempts to negotiate a new deal falling on deaf ears to this point.
How Riyad Mahrez ‘ruined’ Bayern’s chances of signing Leroy Sane
Had fate played out a little differently, Sane might already be pitched up in Bavaria, tearing Bundesliga defences apart with his dynamic dribbling and ferocious pace. However, according to The Athletic, his move to Bayern was shelved thanks to a wicked twist of fate involving Riyad Mahrez.
Their report suggests Mahrez was set to start in the Community Shield back in August, meaning Sane would have taken his place on the substitute’s bench.
However, Mahrez was left out of the squad after Manchester City’s medical staff were unable to identify the ingredients in a nasal spray administered to the winger while he was on international duty with Algeria at the African Cup of Nations weeks earlier.
After consulting the FA, the decision was taken to leave Mahrez out of the squad to avoid breaching doping rules and Sane was handed a start, but was injured within the opening 10 minutes, effectively ending Bayern’s interest in the short term, at least.
