Pep Guardiola has said he wants to help Leroy Sane “be the best” after all but confirming the winger will stay at Manchester City this summer.

Sane has been heavily linked with a move Bayern Munich after finding his game-time at City reduced during the second half of last season.

Will Sane stay with Man City? Five key things to know…

  • Sane was named PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017/18.
  • But he found himself in and out of the team last season as City won a domestic treble.
  • As a result, the German has been linked with a move to Bayern.
  • The Bundesliga giants have publicly expressed an interest in signing Sane this summer.
  • But Guardiola has suggested the 23-year-old will be staying put.

The Germany international had been expected to seal a move to Bayern earlier in the summer, but it now appears he is set to remain in the Premier League.

Guardiola was asked about Sane’s future after City’s pre-season victory over West Ham United on Wednesday.

“Yes,” Guardiola said when asked if he expects Sane to stay. “The club made him an offer last year. As I said many times, we want people happy to be here. We are going to help him to be the best.

“We know his potential and what his level is. He has a special quality difficult to find around the world.

“He knows, they all know, it’s difficult (to play regularly) because of the quality we have.

“But, at the same time, I spoke to the club 10 times (to say) I want people here to be happy. If they don’t want, they go. The desire to have him to be with us is always there.”

The City boss was asked to clarify if Sane would stick around, to which he responded: “I answered the question, and I was really clear.”

Sane scored 16 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions last term but was left on the bench in five of City’s last 14 Premier League matches.

He completed 90 minutes just once during that 14-game stretch and will need to feature more often next season to be convinced he has a future at the Etihad.
