It’s an El Super Clasico for the ages as Guadalajara meet eternal rivals Club America in the quarter finals of the Guardianes 2020 Liga MX final phase on Thursday at 3:06am (UK time).
In Europe the rivalries range from Germany’s Der Klassiker, to the North London derby in England, and of course, El Clasico in Spain. But, in Central America the biggest derby is contested between Guadalajara and Club America, royalty in Mexico, and two of the most followed clubs.
With Guadalajara and Club America finishing seventh and third respectively in the standings, the former partook in the inaugural ‘reclassification’ phase, an extra qualifying round for the first time since the Clausura 2008 season, which has expanded the teams from eight to twelve.
Chivas subsequently took on 10th-seeded Necaxa last week and edged a 1-0 win at the Estadio Akron courtesy of Jesus Ricardo Angulo. That has set up a meeting with fierce rivals Club America, who went straight to the quarter-finals as a high seeded team.
This is a passionate rivalry deeply ensconced in the tapestry of each club, and while contests between Chivas and Aguilas always carry an element of spice, this being a quarter-final has only amped up the weight of significance. Whether you’re a Liga MX fan or not, this is a unique derby that you will not want to miss!

Player to watch: Giovani Dos Santos (Club America)
Kept on ice for the draw with Juarez last time out, manager Miguel Herrera was not prepared to risk his talismanic No 10 in the final match before the Torneo Guardianes 2020. A product of Barcelona’s hallowed La Masia, the former Tottenham playmaker was tipped for stardom upon his first steps at the Camp Nou, and while an extraordinarily graceful player on his day, it’s fair to say that not many expected Dos Santos to be plying his trade in Liga MX at the age of 31.
That is certainly no slight on the Mexican top flight, but when you consider the potential of Dos Santos and the hype surrounding his name a little over a decade ago, many thought he would be a future Ballon d’Or winner. However, hype, as we know, can be a poisoned chalice, and Dos Santos never did vindicate that seismic expectation on his shoulders. Now at Club America, after a three-year stint in MLS with LA Galaxy, Dos Santos should play a key role in this Super Clasico.
Scoreline prediction: Guadalajara 1-2 Club America
