Groningen vs Heerenveen build-up & previous line-ups:

Last season was FC Groningen’s best Eredivisie’s performance since their 2015/16 campaign. Danny Buijs’ men finished seventh with 50 points the most they’ve accumulated in five years. Groningen consequently qualified for the end-of-season European competition play-offs but fell at the first hurdle. Looking to go one better in 2021/22 — Groningen’s last top six finish came a decade ago — their pre-season didn’t get off to the best of starts. De Trots van het Noorden began with a 1-1 draw at Genk before suffering a narrow 3-2 loss against Verl. However, things narrowly turned around when they ran out 1-0 winners over Osnabrück, but this meeting with domestic rivals Heerenveen should give us a better gauge to where they’re at.

For a third consecutive season Heerenveen have ended an Eredivisie season either 10th or below. Before that De Superfriezen had finished eighth (2017/18) and ninth (2016/17). Their 39 points total was the club’s second lowest since the 2009/10 season. Also for a second successive campaign they’d mustered single digit victories which is something Heerenveen have never managed to do in Dutch top division history. Going into the new campaign Johnny Jansen’s side began with a 3-1 pre-season win over FC Utrecht’s second team before registering a 2-2 stalemate with Kortrijk. They’d suffer a 2-0 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv though since recovered with a 3-2 success over TOP Oss.

  • Groningen (vs Osnabrück): Hoekstra; El Hankouri, Te Wierik, Dammers, Kasanwirjo, Gudmundsson; Matusiwa, Lundqvist; Strand Larsen, De Leeuw, Joosten.
  • Heerenveen (vs TOP Oss): Mous; Van Ewijk, Van Ottele, Bochniewicz, Akujobi; De Jong, Halilovic, J. Veerman; Van Bergen, Nygren, Shopov.

Player to watch: Joey Veerman (Heerenveen)

Newly-crowned Scottish champions Rangers are reportedly keeping tabs on Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman who earned a seal of approval from Oranje centurion Rafael van der Vaart last season. The ex-Spurs man went as far to compare his playing style to legendary Italian tempo setter Andrea Pirlo, hyperbolic as that may seem there is a degree of elegance to Veerman’s game, hence growing interest in his services. For now he’s tied down at the Abe Lenstra Stadion until June 2024 but with how quickly things move you can’t guarantee he will be donning a Heerenveen jersey come the start of the new season. To date he’s made 64 appearances for the club in all competitions subsequently registering 14 goals and 16 assists.
