Groningen vs AZ build-up & previous line-ups:

It’s been a frustrating start for Groningen this season. After their opening nine Eredivisie matches they’ve picked up just one victory while suffering four defeats. Danny Buijs’ side consequently find themselves sitting third from bottom but they’re a win or so away from escaping the danger zone. That sole win, that came on the opening weekend, has since been followed up by an eight-game winless streak (four draws and three defeats) which is their longest drought without tasting success in over three years. If we stretch back into last season then Groningen have now gone eight games (five draws and three defeats) without collecting a home win; that last success came in February 2021, when they ran out 1-0 winners over Fortuna Sittard.

AZ started with a shock 1-0 loss at RKC Waalwijk but soon recovered with a 1-3 away success over Heerenveen but that was since followed with three consecutive Eredivisie losses. Pascal Jansen’s men never panicked and can make it four wins in a row this weekend. These string of results catapulted the Alkmaar-based club into ninth and five points behind third place FC Utrecht while having a game in hand. The Cheeseheads also go into this Sunday’s game at the Euroborg with a tepid away record in 2021; across their previous 15 road games this calendar year they’ve returned home with eight wins. The remainder of those matches consist of five losses with two of those (3-2 at Heracles and 3-1 at Twente) already coming this season.

Player to watch: Jesper Karlsson (AZ)

The loss of forwards Myron Boadu and Calvin Stengs to Ligue 1 this summer was always going to sting. AZ, who have shown their resourcefulness before, needed their remaining attackers to step up and no one has risen to the occasion more than 23-year-old Swedish winger Jesper Karlsson who after the opening nine rounds finds himself on four goals and three assists. This makes Karlsson the AZ player with the most goal involvements so far this season. Incredibly all of these efforts have come in the past four matchdays; he’d blank in terms of productivity in AZ’s opening four fixtures before scoring in three of their last Eredivisie outings and in the game (against Camburr) he failed to find the net Karlsson created for Owen Wijndal as the 2009 ran out 1-3 winners. Being a relative newcomer to Dutch football’s top division — having joined in September 2020 — he’s faced 19 different teams so far and has failed to score or create against five (Emmen, Ajax, Fortuna Sittard, PEC Zwolle and this weekend’s opponents Groningen)
