Grigor Dimitrov came into the Vienna Open in poor form having exited both his home Sofia Open and the Stockholm Open at the first opportunity, having been the third seed for the former and sixth at the latter. At the Sofia Open that brought a second-round exit, having been given a bye through the first round before losing to Ilya Ivashka while in Stockholm Jiri Lehecka sent Dimitrov packing in the first round.

Qualifier Thiago Monteiro was the man looking to knock Dimitrov out of the first round this time, but the Bulgarian was pretty comfortable in his 6-3 6-4 victory. It was a repeat of that score in Dimitrov’s second match, a straight-set victory over third seed Andrey Rublev.

In September, Giron made his maiden appearance in an ATP tour final, reaching the San Diego Open showpiece but it ended in defeat as compatriot Brandon Nakashima won 6-4 6-4. Since the San Diego Open, Giron has fallen at the second round of the Gijon Open and the first round of the European Open, not ideal preparation for Vienna.

Unseeded, Giron started the Vienna Open against Tallon Griekspoor in the first round and after a close first set eventually cruised to victory, winning 6-4 6-2. In the second round, Giron took on Brit Cameron Norrie and made little work of his opponent, taking the match 6-3 6-4.
