Gold Cup 2021 permutations:

Can Mexico retain their title?

El Tri have won four of the last six Gold Cups, including the 2019 edition where they beat the United States 1-0 in the final. The USA have brought a young squad to this season’s tournament, with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie left at home to rest for World Cup qualifying, while Canada are without the injured Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David.

Mexico, meanwhile, have gone in strong for this competition, with Tata Martino packing out his squad with the likes of Hirving Lozano — who had to pull out after the first game through injury — Jesus Corona and Hector Herrera. In theory, this leaves them well-placed to cruise through the tournament and lift the trophy for a record 12th time.

But in their opening match, Mexico could only manage a 0-0 draw with Trinidad and Tobago. El Tri attempted 30 shots but hit the target with just seven and were unable to muster enough clear-cut chances on Marvin Phillip’s goal despite dominating 83% possession and out-passing Trinidad and Tobago — who didn’t have a shot on target — 695-151.

Even though Mexico followed that up with consecutive wins to top Group A, as well as a 3-0 win over Honduras in the quarter-finals, this shock result will offer hope to Gregg Berhalter’s experimental and young USMNT squad that they can indeed mount a challenge this year. El Tri‘s semi-final opponents Canada will also hold out some hope they can cause a shock in this week’s hotly-anticipated clash, despite being without Davies and David.
