Gladbach vs Dortmund build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Marco Rose has enjoyed a great start to life as Dortmund manager following his move from Gladbach. BVB have won four of their five Bundesliga games so far and although they’ve leaked 11 goals — the fourth-highest amount in the league — they’re only behind Bayern (23) in terms of goals scored (17). You certainly can’t criticise them for a lack of entertainment.

The same cannot be said for Rose’s former club, Gladbach, who sit 16th after five games with just one win and four points to their name. This weekend’s hosts have scored just five goals so far and despite boasting one of the Bundesliga’s stronger sides on paper, have failed to find their stride at all so far under Adi Hutter.

  • Gladbach (vs Augsburg): Sommer; Beyer, Ginter, Elvedi, Scally; Neuhaus, Zakaria; Herrmann, Stindl, Netz; Plea.
  • Dortmund (vs Union Berlin): Kobel; Meunier*, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro; Bellingham, Witsel, Dahoud; Reus, Haaland, Malen.

Ramy Bensebaini, Stefan Lainer and Mamadou Doucoure all remain sidelined, but Marcus Thuram could return to action here.

Dortmund, meanwhile, are missing Emre Can, Julian Brandt and Mateu Morey through injury, while Dan-Axel Zagadou and Marcel Schmeltzer are nearing a return but remain doubtful. Thomas Meunier and Gio Reyna are also fitness concerns.

Marco Rose “focusing on essentials” ahead of Gladbach return

Agreeing to leave for a direct rival long before the 2020/21 season had concluded didn’t exactly go down well with Gladbach fans last season, so Marco Rose knows he’s unlikely to get a friendly reception on Saturday.

With that in mind, you’d forgive him for placing extra emphasis on this match, and maybe he is secretly desperate for his side to pull out all the stops to get one over on his former employers.

But speaking to reporters earlier in the week, Rose insisted he is focusing purely on matters on the pitch, believing his players are set for a tougher game than the league table suggests.

“I’m focusing on the essentials, and that’s the game. I try to shut out all the stories around the game,” Rose said at the pre-match press conference.

“At the same time, I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of people, who might also be looking forward to seeing me. Gladbach is a team with high quality that can beat anyone in the Bundesliga.

“They will do everything they can to win this special game against a strong opponent from Dortmund.”
