Gil Vicente vs Porto build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The Primeira Liga is currently home to one of the closest relegation battles in Europe this season with just 10 points separating seventh-placed Santa Clara and Boavista at the bottom of the table and, unfortunately for Gil Vicente, they are fully involved. Gil Vicente are currently 15th, outside the relegation play-off zone by virtue of goal difference, holding a three-goal advantage over Famalicao. However, they are also just one point clear of Boavista and can just as easily end the weekend bottom as they could 10th.

The former is more likely with Porto offering tough opposition for Gil Vicente this weekend. Sergio Conceicao’s men will be resigned to concede their chances of winning the league this season, staying 10 points behind Sporting CP following their draw last weekend, knowing time is against them. But they cannot rest with the fight for Champions League football so close. Porto are just one point behind Braga in the final automatic group stage spot and may feel aggrieved that the position isn’t theirs already, with four draws in their past five matches. They will also be down following their defeat to Braga in the Portuguese Cup in midweek, but there is no time to dwell with a trip to Juventus in their Champions League last-16 second leg just days away.

  • Gil Vicente (vs Tondela): Denis; Paulinho, Nogueira, Fernandes*, Henrique Gomes; Lucas Mineiro, Goncalves, Pedrinho; Lourency, Samuel Lino, Fujimoto.
  • Porto (vs Braga): Diogo Costa; Manafa, Mbemba*, Pepe, Sarr; Grujic, Uribe; Corona, Otavio, Diaz; Marega.

Centre-back Ruben Fernandes is suspended for Gil Vicente following his red card last weekend, joining Miullen on the sidelines. Chancel Mbemba came off injured in the defeat to Braga in midweek and will not feature, nor will Mouhamed Mbaye or Ivan Marcano, while Nanu is understandably out for the foreseeable future.

Player to watch: Jesus Corona (Porto)

Although he may not get the publicity of the goalscorers, Jesus Corona has been one of Porto’s best players this season, bringing much-needed creativity to the team.

The 28-year-old Mexican has missed just one of Porto’s 37 games across all competitions so far this season and has been ever-present in the league, starting 19 of 21 with two substitute appearances. Corona is currently Porto’s leading assister in the Primeira Liga, setting up five goals for his team-mates so far, with only Benfica pair Everton and Darwin Nunez managing more across the whole division.

But he does stand alone for chances created with his 51 more than any other player in the Primeira Liga this season, not to mention his Expected Assists of 5.12 also being top, while only Pizzi has completed more passes in the final third than Corona’s 278.
