After finishing second in their group Germany faced Montenegro in the round of 16, running out 85-79 winners, before squaring off against Greece and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the quarter-finals. They subsequently passed that examination by 11 points (107-96). A date with Spain in the final four was set and Gordon Herbert’s side nearly pulled off a result as they fell to a 91-96 loss. Los Angeles Lakers point guard Dennis Schröder was again Germany’s leading points scorer. He goes into the bronze medal game averaging 21.6 points per game which is a total only bettered by five players.

A third-place finish in the group phase secured Poland a knockout stage berth. After narrowly getting past Ukraine (94-86) and Slovenia (90-87) they came in for a rude awakening against France in the semi-finals. The one-time EuroBasket champions inflicted a 41-point loss on the Poles with no one in their side managing to reach double figures in terms of points scored. A.J. Slaughter, who posted nine points against the French, averages 13.6 PPG for the championship which makes him Poland’s second most effective scorer behind small forward Mateusz Ponitka (14.0)

This will be the ninth EuroBasket showdown between Germany and Poland with Germany currently leading the head-to-head (6-2). Their last meeting in 2015 saw Poland run out 68-67 winners.
