Die Mannschaft reached the quarter-finals in 2017 and will be aiming to repeat that feat this time around under former German League champion Gordon Herbert. The 6ft 6in tactician had few issues navigating an awkward Group B, finishing as runners-up behind defending title-holders Slovenia, with four wins and a defeat from their five matches.

The 1993 EuroBasket champions kicked off their campaign with a 76-63 win over France, before claiming the scalps of Bosnia and Herzegovina — winning by a 10-point margin — and Lithuania in overtime. The co-hosts then came unstuck to eventual table-toppers Slovenia, but finished with a comprehensive 106-71 swing against winless Hungary.

Montenegro had a tougher time in a fiercely-competitive Group A, winning three times and losing twice. Bosko Radovic rallied the troops after a curtain-raising loss to Turkey, winning successive games against Belgium and Bulgaria, but Spain stopped them in their tracks on matchday four, with La Roja sealing an 82-65 triumph. They confirmed their place in the knockouts after a routine final-day win over co-hosts Georgia.
