Germany is perfect heading into this last-eight showdown. Wins over Australia, Finland and Japan in the opening group stage were followed up by impressive wins over both Georgia and Slovenia in the next round. Another success will see the Germans reach the semi-finals for the second time. Dennis Schroder has been one of the standout players and is clearly Germany’s leader. If Latvia can slow down Schroder their chances of going through goes up. One of the main guys who will be responsible for that is Latvian guard Arturs Zagars.

Playing in their maiden World Cup tournament Latvia recorded wins over Lebanon and medal favourites France before losing to Canada in the first stage. They bounced back to register wins over Spain and then Brazil. The newcomers are the fourth-best three-point shooting team at 40.2%, having made the most threes during the tournament – 66 or 13.2 per game, topped by 18 triples against Lebanon. Germany is not far behind at 39.1% and 12.6 per game, including 20 three-pointers against Georgia.

This will be their first World Cup meeting though Germany and Latvia have squared off five times on the continental level. Germany holds a 3-2 advantage, including winning the last game 81-80 at the FIBA EuroBasket 2011.
