Gaziantep vs Besiktas build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
This will be only the third Süper Lig season in which Gaziantep have faced Besiktas and in four previous meetings they’ve secured two home wins and on both occasions GFK have registered at least three goals. Heading into the second weekend Gaziantep are on the backfoot. Erol Bulut’s team sensationally fell to a 3-2 defeat at Fatih Karagümrük – a game that saw former Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji score for both sides. If we include the previous season; Gaziantep have won just two of their last 10 league outings, with neither of those wins coming at home. In fact they’re currently on a three-game losing streak at the Gaziantep Stadyumu.
One goal was ultimately the difference as Besiktas secured their 16th Turkish Süper Lig title last season. Sergen Yalçın’s men finished level on 84 points with Istanbul rivals Galatasaray but their goal difference (+45) was one better. It subsequently ended a three year championship drought and heading into matchday two of this new season they’ve started their defence on the right footing. The Black Eagles ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Rizespor and as touched upon they’ll be seeking a first away league win at Gaziantep.
- Gaziantep (vs Karagumruk): Güvenc; Olkowski, Zengin, Djilobodji, Ersoy, Mendyl; Niyaz, Soyalp, Jefferson; Sagal*, Dicko.
- Besiktas (vs Caykur Rizespor): Destanoglu; Rosier, Vida, Welinton, N’Sakala; Souza; Ghezzal, Ucan, Hutchinson, N’Koudou; Karaman.
Ángelo Sagal misses out through suspension. The 28-year-old forward, who netted in Gaziantep’s opening round loss at Fatih Karagumruk, would receive two yellow cards. Cenk Sahin, Alexandru Maxim and Oguz Ceylan meanwhile are doubtful for the hosts. Atakan Üner and Ajdin Hasic will sit this match out for Besiktas as they continue to recover from their respective injuries.
Player to watch: Michy Batshuayi (Besiktas)
Incredibly since joining Chelsea from Marseille in 2016 this will be Michy Batshuayi fifth loan spell with four different clubs. To date he’s made 77 appearances under two Blues managers (Frank Lampard and Antonio Conte) though it’s fair to say his time at Stamford Bridge is drawing to a close despite recently extending his contract with them until 2023. After playing Bundesliga and La Liga football he’s now about to experience what the Süper Lig has to offer. The 27-year-old Belgian marksman, who could make his debut against Gaziantep, has managed to bag 15 goals across 54 league appearances — bulk of those coming at Borussia Dortmund — outside the Premier League giants.
