Galatasaray vs Alanyaspor build-up & previous line-ups:
Last season was a disappointing campaign for Galatasaray as they missed out on winning the Turkish Super Lig by a goal difference of one, having finished level on points with winners Besiktas. As a result, they were sent to the Champions League second qualifying round, where they were smashed by PSV and eventually had to settle for the Europa League. Domestically, things have been a bit better as they have won two and drawn two of their opening four games so far, currently sitting fifth, two points behind leaders Besiktas. Giresunspor and Hatayspor were the two teams beaten, while Kasimpasa and Trabzonspor held Galatasaray, the latter currently sitting second.
Their opponents this weekend, Alanyaspor, have also won two of their opening four games of the new season but they have coupled them with defeats to currently sit 11th. Although they did not qualify for European football, Alanyaspor will have been happy with their seventh-placed finish last season, just five points behind Sivasspor in the final Europa Conference League qualifying spot. But now they will be looking to improve on that and make the step into European football for the first time since 2000/01 when they contested the Uefa Cup qualifying rounds. Alanyaspor started the new season with a 1-0 win over Istanbul Basaksekir but followed that up with two big defeats against Altay and Hatayspor, the latter a 5-0 defeat, before the international break. They returned with a 1-0 win over Giresunspor and will be hoping to build on that against a Galatasaray side that played Europa League football on Thursday.
- Galatasaray (vs Trabzonspor): Muslera; Yedlin, Luyindama, Nelsson, Van Aanholt; Kutlu; Kilinc, Morutan, Cicaldau, Akturkoglu; Dervisoglu.
- Alanyaspor (vs Giresunspor): Kirintili; Juanfran, Awaziem, Milunovic, Borja; Gunes, Aksoy; Candeias, Akbaba, Davidson; Diedhiou.
Player to watch: Kerem Akturkoglu (Galatasaray)
As Altay and Hatayspor have already shown this season, Alanyaspor’s defence is vulnerable and statistically the worst in the Turkish Super Lig so far, conceding nine goals in four games (despite also keeping two clean sheets). The man to exploit this for Galatasaray will be Kerem Akturkoglu, who has started the new season well having struggled for consistent game time in 2020/21.
The 22-year-old has started all four of Galatasaray’s league games so far as well as the six qualifying games they have played in the Champions League and Europa League, already beating his record of six starts from last season. In the Turkish Super Lig, Akturkoglu has scored one goal from five shots, but his bigger threat comes from the creative side of his game.
No Galatasaray player has created more chances than Akturkoglu’s seven in the league so far, with the Turkish midfielder having also created three Big Chances – bettered only by Konyaspor’s Guilherme across the rest of the division. Although he is yet to record an assist in the league, Akturkoglu does have three in Europa League qualifying, so it can only be a matter of time before he gets off the mark.
