Galatasaray vs Marseille build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The introduction of the Europa Conference League has brought changes to the Europa League with the teams finishing first in their group advancing straight to the last-16 while the runners-up must take on Champions League dropouts in the last-32. With four games played in Group E, Galatasaray have the advantage and are in a good position to go straight through to the last-16, but will first have to start by confirming their spot in the knockout stage (avoiding a drop to the Europa Conference League). The Turkish side have a four-point advantage over third-placed Marseille and only need a draw to remain in the Europa League. Victory would put the last-16 in their hands, though they would need to hope Lazio drop points or avoid defeat against the Italian side in matchweek six.

Marseille also have their destiny in their own hands, knowing two wins from their final two games will secure Europa League football. Victory over Galatasaray on Thursday would see them move to within one point of the Turkish side, safe in the knowledge that they and Lazio face off in the final matchweek, so at least one side will drop points. However, victory may be a fall order for Marseille as they are yet to win in the Europa League this season. Jorge Sampaoli’s men have drawn all four of their group stage matches so far, scoring three and conceding three, with a goalless draw against Galatasaray in the reverse fixture.

  • Galatasaray (vs Fenerbahce): Muslera; Yedlin, Nelsson, Marcao, Van Aanholt; Kutlu; Feghouli, Morutan, Cicaldu, Akturkoglu; Dervisoglu.
  • Marseille (vs Lyon): Lopez; Rongier*, Saliba, Caleta-Car, Peres; Guendouzi, Kamara, Payet*; Lirola, Milik, De la Fuente

Dimitri Payet and Valentin Rongier are both suspended for Marseille for an accumulation of yellow cards. Galatasaray are without Sacha Boey and Oma Elabdellaoui.

Player to watch: Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray)

Galatasaray have the best defence in the Europa League this season conceding just one goal and keeping three clean sheets in four matches, and they have Fernando Muslera to thank.

The Uruguayan shot-stopper hasn’t been the busiest goalkeeper in the Europa League, that honour falls to Lukas Hradecky and his 19 saves, but Muslera has still been forced to make 10 saves in four appearances. These aren’t just routine saves either.

Galatarasay have an Expected Goals Conceded total of 4.97 this season, just over two more than the best record in the Europa League which, coincidentally, is Marseille (2.81). But while Marseille have conceded three goals, underperforming against their xGC, Muslera has outperformed his, preventing 3.97 goals in four matches. Only Bayer Leverkusen (4.29) and Lokomotiv Moscow (4.15) have a better difference between their xGC and actual goals conceded.

Considering Galatasaray have scored just three goals and still lead their group, Muslera may be their most important player in the Europa League this season.
