Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says goalkeeper Adrian could miss the Reds’ Premier League game against Southampton on Saturday.
The Spaniard was the hero as Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday night, saving the deciding penalty from Tammy Abraham in the penalty shootout.
Adrian a doubt for Liverpool? Five things to know…
- Adrian signed for Liverpool in the summer to be Alisson’s back-up.
- The Spaniard made his first start on Wednesday after Alisson suffered a calf injury.
- Adrian saved the deciding Chelsea penalty to win the Uefa Super Cup for Liverpool.
- But Klopp has now confirmed Adrian is a doubt for the weekend with a swollen ankle.
- The injury was picked up after a fan ran onto the pitch during Liverpool’s celebrations.
A late summer signing to provide back up for Alisson following Simon Mignolet’s departure, Adrian hadn’t been expected to play a part for Liverpool so early on.
But he made his debut in the 4-1 Premier League win over Norwich City, having to replace the injured Alisson, before making his first start in Istanbul.
And Klopp has now revealed the Spaniard is a doubt for the trip to Southampton after being injured by a fan in the post-Super Cup celebrations.
“I don’t understand why in the world of social media when we are all together, a supporter jumped over something and kicked [Adrian’s] ankle,” he told reporters.
“It is swollen but we have to see.
“We need to think about Saturday to find a way to win the game.
“Andy Lonergan is in training with [Caoimhin] Kelleher and we have them if we have to make a decision.

“Adrian was a week before, Lonergan has trained with us. Kelleher has potential but is not 100 per cent yet. We will see.
“Adrian won’t go for a scan. We wait for the swelling to go down. The flight didn’t help but I saw him now, it looks better and make a decision.”
Andy Lonergan is an option to start in Adrian’s place should the Spaniard not recover from his injury, after the 35-year-old appeared on the bench at the Super Cup. Caoimhin Kelleher, 20, is also in contention. The Liverpool youth academy product featured in pre-season and was on the bench for the Uefa Super Cup win.

Klopp pleads with fans to stay in the stands
The post-match invasion was not the first instance of a pitch invader in Istanbul. In the opening stages of Wednesday’s final, another supported managed to make their way onto the pitch before eventually being halted by security.
And although some fans may find it amusing to see someone run onto the pitch, Klopp does not agree.
He added: “If the person cannot stop himself then the fans around him must. It is not funny. Wow! How can something like this happen?
“We love our fans, no doubt but if they could stop doing that. We played v City someone ran on the pitch Streaker? Norwich, someone as well. It’s not funny. Like the girl in the Champions League final, she made money. What can we do?”
