Is Frank Lampard ready for the Chelsea job? Blues fans deliver their verdict

Just one year after taking charge at Stamford Bridge, it appears Maurizio Sarri’s time as Chelsea manager is almost up.

In his first season in English football, the Italian led Chelsea to finish third in the Premier League – guaranteeing the return of Champions League football.

There were also two cup finals, with a League Cup penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City followed by the Europa League glory over Arsenal – Sarri’s first ever major trophy.

But despite a successful season, Sarri has come under scrutiny for Chelsea’s failure to adapt to his attacking style of play, one of the job specifications upon his arrival, as well as alienating fans and some key players.

That, coupled with Juventus needing a new manager following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri, has led Sarri to become favourite to take charge of the Serie A champions.

Should that happen, then Chelsea will need another new manager, their third in just over three years. A large list of potential Sarri replacements has been put together, including Allegri and Watford boss Javi Gracia.

But one name which stands out more than most is Frank Lampard. Chelsea’s all-time record goalscorer has just finished his first season as a manager with Derby County, leading the Rams to defeat in the Championship play-off final.

Although the Chelsea links are no surprise, there have been some concerns raised over Lampard’s lack of experience as a manager and the work which needs to be done on the Blues squad.

So, should Chelsea take the risk on Frank Lampard this summer? Or is it better to give the former midfielder a few more years, appointing a more experienced man instead? We asked six members of the Stamford Bridge faithful to find out where fans stand on the matter….

@FutbolCheIsea: “It is way too early for Lampard to come in. Frank ideally still needs to have more experience managing before he comes to Chelsea. Fans can use the examples of how well Zinedine Zidane and Pep Guardiola did at Madrid and Barca, but this Chelsea team is nowhere near good enough, especially for Lampard to come into with a transfer ban.”

@cobhamblues: “I don’t know that it’s ‘too soon’ per se, but there is no downside to letting Frank continue to develop at Derby. No other big club is going to come in for him this season and he’ll have his heart set on returning to Chelsea. Let’s see how the 2019/2020 season turns out before throwing him into the fire.”

@ChelseaCentral_: “Now that John Terry and Lampard are in management positions, it’s natural that they’ll be linked with the Chelsea job whenever there is a vacancy. Any real Chelsea fan would love to see Lampard successfully managing Chelsea, he epitomises what the club is about.

“However, there couldn’t be a worse time to take the job. With a transfer ban, an ageing squad in need of surgery and our best player on the move, it’s a massive rebuilding project. Frank’s philosophy is exciting but he should continue to develop for now at Derby, the last thing we want is for Frank to taint his legacy by taking the job too soon.”

@AbsoluteChelsea: “Bringing Frank back would be a perfect move to build a rapport again between the fans, staff and players. The only unknown is whether his inexperience will show. Chelsea love chaos anyway, so why not?!”

@Laus1507: “For his own sake and legacy at Chelsea, I would prefer to give Lampard a couple more years of managerial experience elsewhere before making him a Blue again. Although, with Sarri looking set to leave the club, the Derby boss might still be the best choice to replace him.”

@CFCExtra: “Lampard is ultimately the man who should be managing Chelsea in the long term but now is too soon for him. Give Sarri some time to lay the foundations and have Lamps take over when he’s developed more as a coach and proved himself.”
