The scout who recommended John McGinn to Aston Villa believes the talented midfielder could be headed to Old Trafford.

Bobby Jenks has revealed that Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson could persuade the Red Devils to make a move for the talented Scot.

Is McGinn to Man Utd only a matter of time?: Five things to know…

  • Bobby Jenks recommended Villa sign McGinn when the midfielder was at Hibs.
  • There were rumours this summer that the Scottish midfielder was wanted at Old Trafford.
  • McGinn has thrived in the Premier League for Villa this season bagging three goals and an assist so far.
  • Jenks believes United will renew their interest in the 24-year-old in January.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson could persuade his former club to sign his compatriot.

With Manchester United struggling, the urge to sign a dynamic midfielder will be cranking up and McGinn could be the perfect target.

The 24-year-old’s performances have attracted much acclaim and Jenks thinks this will not have escaped the attention of the Red Devils or their former boss.

“He’s up there with the best-performing midfielders in the division,”he told The Athletic.

“Wait until he’s had a year at that level and then we can say more.

“What I do know is that Sir Alex Ferguson is wondering why Manchester United let a talented Scottish boy slip through. He’ll be keeping a close eye on him that’s for sure and if he continues the way he is, you can bet he’ll be telling his pals at United, too.”

The Scottish midfielder has all the qualities to play for a club with the expectation level of United according to Jenks. McGinn’s will to win is what keeps him improving and this could see him play at an even better level than he is currently doing.

“He wanted to win and knew that he had to work hard to do so,” Jenks added.

“He was a typical Scottish boy with the heart of a lion. I noticed that from a young age.

“He was a box-to-box player who could win the ball, fire it up to the striker and support him.

“I felt he could add goals to his game and was dangerous around the edge of the box. He’s showing that now.

“He has a great engine and attitude. Yes, he got a wee bit agitated and would nip in every now and then. He picked up some bookings but that’s just his style. He wants to win the ball back and does it so well.

“Villa needed someone like him. They didn’t have any player quite like him. Last season he put himself about in the Championship to show what he was made of and I’m just pleased it’s worked out for him and the club now.”

United’s slow start: Will McGinn improve the Red Devils?

Manchester United have made a really disappointing start to the new season, winning just two of their opening seven games.

They are already three points off the top-four but performance levels have been the most worrying aspect of their play. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already under pressure and a new addition in midfield would be a boost.

McGinn has already scored the same number of goals this season as both Marcus Rashford and Daniel James but a fee close to £50m would likely be needed to prize him away from Villa Park.
