Forest Green Rovers have hit out at Watford for making an approach for Rob Edwards without contacting them first, confirming the 39-year-old has now left the club.

The former England U16 manager has proven a revelation at the New Lawn, guiding Rovers to League One for the first time in the club’s history after clinching first in the fourth tier this campaign.

Watford by contrast will be heading down next term, recently confirming their relegation after losing to Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Roy Hodgson set to leave the club when the Premier League season comes to a close.

Infamously renowned for their sign-and-sack policy at Vicarage Road, Edwards is now expected to become the Pozzo family’s ninth permanent manager in just five years, hoping the relatively-youthful coach can guide them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

On Wednesday morning, Rovers were yet to receive notification from Watford regarding their approach for the former Wales defender, prompting huge backlash from the club’s hierarchy which has ultimately culminated in Edwards leaving under a cloud.

A statement on the official website read: “FGR confirms the departure of Head Coach Rob Edwards. Rob was a key part of the team that gained promotion to League One this season. We’re disappointed that our support, loyalty and honesty towards Rob has been repaid in this way – with negotiations taking place behind our backs.

“We had no contact from Watford, from whom we might expect less, but in any event this kind of behaviour gives football a bad name.

“We thank Rob for all his work at FGR – forgive him the manner of his departure and wish him well.”
