Slutsk vs Belshina: Top against bottom

It’s still early days, with the 2020 Vysheyshaya Liga just five games old, but FC Slutsk – managed by Vitaliy Pavlov, the former coach of Sunday’s opponents  – have gotten started like a house on fire. They go into matchday six as the league’s top scorers having bagged nine goals and found the net in all but one of their matches to date (this came in a narrow 0-1 loss against Dinamo Brest on matchday two).

Goal difference is proving to be the, well, difference for Slutsk. Their ruthlessness in front of goal puts top of the embryonic table ahead of Vitebsk and Torpedo BelAZ (all on ten points). Their rapid start is a far cry from how results have gone for Belshina, who currently prop up the championship.

The newly-promoted club, based in the city of Bobruisk, have endured a difficult start to life in the top division, having lost three of their opening five league outings. Plus, they are yet to register a win, something they have in common with fellow strugglers Smolevichy-STI.

This could prove a one-sided affair given FC Slutsk average 1.8 goals per game while Belshina shipped the most to date (7). The visitors also don’t have a clean sheet to their name and failed to score in two games so far.

Belarus Premier League: Other games to look out for

Dinamo Minsk are seeking back-to-back wins when they visit second from Smolevichy-STI on Friday afternoon. Consecutive defeats to start the season got their defence off to a terrible start, but as things stand they are just four points off the top.

BATE travel to high-flying Gorodeya, who are just a point below first place and come into this game on the back of a three-game winning streak. Their visitors, meanwhile, were held to a goalless draw at home to Torpedo BelAZ last time out.
