The Belarus Premier League will go ahead this weekend despite most major leagues across the globe not set to resume until the start of May at least.

To many, even that date appears unrealistic. But for now, at least, there are still a few leagues across the globe continuing with their original schedule for fans to take in, despite perhaps being far from familiar viewing.

Belarus Premier League fixtures this weekend

  • Slutsk v Dinamo Brest (Saturday, 10:00)
  • Slavia-Mozyr v BATE (Saturday, 12:00)
  • Minsk v Dinamo Minsk (Saturday, 14:00)
  • Gorodeya v FC Shakhtyor (Saturday, 16:00)
  • Isloch v Smolevichio-STI (Sunday, 14:00)
  • Neman v FC Vitebsk (Sunday, 16:00)

Belarus Premier League teams and players to look out for

The Belarus Premier League may not be the most illustrious competition in European football, but it has gained some attention in recent years thanks to BATE Borisov’s continued participation in the Champions League group stages and Europa League. Many will remember their 1-0 win over Arsenal last February, in which attacker Igor Stasevich made it seven assists in as many appearances in the competition. No player set up more goals during the whole 2018/19 Europa League season, in fact. Only Chelsea winger Willian matched his final total of seven.

Elsewhere, Dynamo Minsk have also provided stern opposition to the likes of Fiorentina and Villarreal in the Europa League.

The season finally got underway last weekend and the biggest shock of the first round came at RCOP-BGU Stadium, where Energetik-BGU managed a shock victory over BATE – the country’s most successful club. Kirill Alshevsky’s charges will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon as they take on Slavia Mozyr, who were also beaten 3-1 by FC Slutsk on the opening weekend.

Following that game, there’s a derby in the capital as FC Minsk take on Dinamo Minsk before Shakhtyor Soligorsk, who have finished in the top three for 10 consecutive years, head to Gorodeya.

There are two further games taking place on Sunday, starting with Isloch’s home fixture against Smolevichi-STI before Vitebsk look to make it two wins from their first two games of the season as they head to Stayden Nyoman to face Neman Grodno.

Most supporters from the UK and Europe will be watching the Belarusian Premier League for the first time and unfortunately, those hoping to catch a glimpse of former Arsenal star Aleksandr Hleb will be left disappointed as he retired at the end of last season.

Although there are no players as well-known to UK audienaces as Hleb in the league anymore, there are some names to look out for. Former Ajax youth product and Dundee United forward Darko Bodul, for example, was among the most prolific strikers in the league last year at Shakhtyor Soligorsk.

Bodul was, however, outscored by BATE’s Stanislaw Drahun. The 31-year-old is one of a clutch of players at Borisov that make up the spine of the Belarus national team along with the likes of Stasevich and Pavel Nyakhaychyk.

Other matches

As for other, and even more niche, competitions currently still active, matches will be played this weekend both Burundi and Nicaragua despite cancellations almost everywhere else.

There’s also a raft of friendlies set to take place in Sweden, Estonia and Finland, with teams from the Allsvenskan and Superettan still playing non-competitive games despite their domestic season being delayed.
