Both sides will be hoping to move out of the bottom four as West Ham welcome Wolves to the London Stadium on Saturday at 5:30pm (UK time).

Saturday’s late kick off sees a West Ham side who are without a win in their last six home games in the Premier League (D3, L3) go head-to-head with a Wolves team who are on a run of seven matches without a victory away from home in the league (D2, L5). As well as struggling for victories, both sides have also found it hard to score in the Premier League during this campaign, scoring just three times apiece in their opening seven fixtures.

Bruno Lage happy to finally have Diego Costa at the club

Bruno Lage will be hoping that the signing of former Chelsea striker Diego Costa will give his side a focal point up front after the recent injuries to both Raúl Jiménez and other summer signing Saša Kalajdžić, who suffered an ACL injury in his Premier League debut against Southampton.

The Spaniard has struggled in front of goal since he departed the Premier League for pastures new back in 2017, scoring just 16 times in 76 league appearances for Atlético Madrid and Atlético Mineiro, but is expected to be unleashed from the start against West Ham, with his manager needing “A reference in the box”.

“I hope he is now ready to compete at this level and I believe we can bring the old Diego Costa to us, because that’s what we need, we need one guy to compete with Raul, and Diego has that profile and he has a different profile to Raul.

“What I want is to have quality players that do everything they can to help the team win the game,” Lage said.

“With his personality, he is that kind of player. That’s why he won what he won at Chelsea and what he won at Atletico Madrid. “If you call Diego Costa here, in five minutes you’ll be laughing because he has that personality, but for sure, if you play one-on-one against him he will break your leg if he needs to, to win the game. This is the kind of profile he has.

“He [Costa] said that to me: ‘I know you ask about my profile, my personality, I am one of the best guys outside the pitch, but inside the pitch, I am very hard.

“That is the kind of man I want also with the quality that he has. It was a simple talk and it was very easy to convince him to join us.”

The Wolves manager also confirmed that this wasn’t the first time that he had tried to bring the Spaniard back to the Premier League, after failing with an attempt back when he arrived in England in 2021.

“When I first came to Wolves, one of my first calls was to João Félix to ask about Diego Costa. João said good things about him, about his personality and the way he continued to play. In that moment he wanted to go back to his country to play, but after what happened with Sasa, I noticed Diego was available and it was a time to talk with him and convince him to come to us.”
