This is the first meeting between two of the sides relegated from the Premier League last season and both have earned four points from their opening two matches. Watford beat Sheffield United on the opening weekend before drawing with West Bromwich Albion on Monday, while Burnley beat Huddersfield Town and then drew with Luton Town.
Watford team news
Despite the doubts surrounding their future, both Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr have played in each of Watford’s two Championship games so far, and the latter was heavy in the headlines in the draw with West Brom. The Senegalese forward, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, opened the scoring with an excellent strike from his own half only to miss a penalty after West Brom had equalised.
Francisco Sierralta had to come off late on on Monday with an injury, but it doesn’t appear to be serious so he could continue as one of Rob Edwards’ three centre-backs. However, Watford will be without Imran Louza, Samuel Kalu and Tom Dele-Bashiru, who suffered a knee injury in training and is set to be out for “two or three months”. New signing Hamza Choudhury could play a role after joining on loan from Leicester.
Burnley team news
Burnley are expected to be without Ashley Westwood and Jay Rodriguez once again, both of whom are yet to play under Vincent Kompany having picked up injuries towards the end of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. In Rodriguez’s absence, Dara Costelloe has deputised as Ashley Barnes’ strike partner or right-winger and will likely continue there.
Nathan Tella is eligible to play having joined on loan from Southampton in time to be registered, but Scott Twine is likely to miss out with a knock and Johann Berg Gudmundsson is not yet fit after injury.
Scoreline prediction: Watford 1-1 Burnley
