Antonio Conte’s side may have lost for the first time this season against Sporting CP in the Champions League but they have won four and drawn two of their six league matches so far, going into this game third. Leicester, meanwhile, have managed just one point from six and have lost their past five league matches.
Ferdinand: Tottenham dropping Son would be blasphemy
One of the questions to arise from Tottenham’s defeat to Sporting on Tuesday was the form (or lack of it) of Son Heung-min. The South Korean was phenomenal last season, finishing as the Premier League’s joint-top scorer with 23 goals in 25 matches alongside Mohamed Salah.
But Son has is yet to score in eight matches across all competitions this season despite starting all eight appearances, with just the solitary assist in the opening weekend 4-1 win over Southampton. Following the signing of Richarlison in the summer and Dejan Kulusevski’s form when playing there have been some murmurs of Son dropping out of the starting XI so the duo can start alongside Harry Kane.
However, Rio Ferdinand has hit back at those claims, reminding fans that similar calls were not made when Kane was struggling for form – particularly when he was failing to score in August.
“No chance, blasphemy,” he told BT Sport.
“Golden Boot winner last season, joint top goalscorer with Mo Salah. We’re six Premier League games in, a couple of Champions League games… and they’re asking for him to be dropped? Were they asking for Harry Kane to be dropped when he didn’t score in August all those times?
“For me, if I’m taking a player out of the Spurs team, [deciding between] him or Harry Kane would be the flip of a coin. He’s a top, top player.”
Michael Owen agreed with Ferdinand and expanded by saying Son would be the one player Tottenham’s Big Six rivals would take, urging Conte to have patience.
“It’s the best he’s ever had in his eighth season, I totally agree with Rio,” Owen added.
“Short memories. If you’re Manchester United, City or Liverpool and you say, ‘You can have one player’… I’d say the majority would take Son. Yes, Harry Kane scores plenty – but he scored more goals last season. He’s just very, very difficult to play against.
“You’ve got to be patient with top players. What would [dropping him] do to his head? He’s carried the team for two, three years. Everyone saying it’s a two-man team with him and Kane, then all of a sudden he has a few quiet games and you drop him?”
