They might be third, but there’s a real argument to be made that Stuttgart are second only to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season when it comes to quality of play and entertainment value. Sebastian Hoeness’ side have played some wonderful football at times and, as a result, are now on the cusp of securing Champions League football for the first time since 2009/10. Die Roten have a six-point cushion between themselves and RB Leipzig in fifth, have won seven and drawn one of their last eight Bundesliga matches and can actually go just two points behind Bayern Munich with a win here after the failing champions lost 2-0 to Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
It won’t be an easy ride on Sunday though. Only arriving in the Bundesliga this season, Heidenheim have shocked everyone by picking up 29 points from 26 games to sit 11th in the table, nowhere near European contention but nine points clear of any sort of relegation trouble. They have been on a bit of a slide, however, taking just two points from their last five games, though that run has included tough fixtures against Leverkusen, Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Stuttgart will be even more cautious given Heidenheim stung them 2-0 in their first meeting this season back in November.
Scoreline prediction: Stuttgart 2-0 Heidenheim
