Sporting v Real Sociedad preview:

Sporting were unable to successfully defend their Primeira Liga, finishing 13 points behind neighbours Benfica last term. Rúben Amorim guided the team to fourth place, meaning no Champions League football next season either. The Lions will instead look forward to Europa League action.

So far this summer they’ve seen Viktor Gyökeres and Francisco Trincão arrive from Coventry City and Barcelona, respectively. Gyökeres bagged 21 goals across 46 league outings as The Sky Blues reached the play-off final.

Among those to leave the club are Manuel Ugarte, Pedro Porro, Tiago Tomás, Arthur Gomes and Héctor Bellerín. Pre-season has been going smoothly, with victories over Estrela (4-1) and Farense (2-1) before a 1-1 draw with Genk.

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, are Champions League-bound, following a fourth-place finish in La Liga last season. This will be the first such campaign since 2013/14, when they were drawn in the same group as Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk. Imanol Alguacil’s side, though, could be without veteran playmaker David Silva, who is expected to announce his retirement after sustaining a serious knee injury.

It’s been relatively quiet on the transfer front, with only ex-Rennes defender Hamari Traoré arriving without a fee. Modibo Sagnan and Portu have departed for Utrecht and Getafe, respectively. This will be the club’s second pre-season fixture, their opening match ending in a 3-1 loss to Osasuna.
