Porto will be looking to close the gap at the top of the table to five points when they head to Estádio José Alvalade for a heavyweight clash against Sporting on Sunday. Sérgio Conceição’s side are in superb form as they look to extend their unbeaten run across all competitions to 21 matches, having won each of their last eight games and keeping a clean sheet in each of their last six.

Opponents Sporting, however, currently sit seven points behind their rivals in fourth as they aim to get back into the European places. After a tough start, their form has picked up in recent weeks, winning six and drawing one of their last eight league matches, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Maritimo at the start of January.

The Dragons are unbeaten in each of the last six meetings between these two sides and are looking to win four consecutive away games at the Estádio José Alvalade and move even further away from them in the league table.

Sporting team news

Since Pedro Porro’s departure to Tottenham on deadline day, Ricardo Esgaio has fitted in seamlessly at RWB for Sporting and is expected to keep his place in the side after two impressive displays, despite the recent signing of Hector Bellerin from Barcelona.

18-year-old Youssef Chermiti scored his first Primeira Liga goal last time out against Rio Ave, giving Rúben Amorim a choice to make up front, in whether to stick with him or go with more experience for such a huge game. Marcus Edwards and Pote are certain of places in the front three however, with the latter scoring 10 goals as well as providing five assists in his 18 league games so far.

Porto team news

Marko Grujic returned to the starting XI against Vizela and looks set to start once more having being rested in the cup in midweek, while 19-year-old Vasco Sousa, who made his first team debut as a substitute in the same game, will look for minutes once more from the bench.

Pepe Aquino was named MOTM against Vizela after scoring the opening goal of the game and was quick to heap praise on his Porto teammates, including Evanilson, who has now provided four assists and scored two goals in his last seven starts for the club.

Our team has quality, no matter who plays, we handle it; different players offer different things, but we have total faith in everyone’s work. FC Porto is a great team, I do my best every day to take all opportunities. I’m happy to help the team, with goals or assists. I always try my best to help get the three points. I thanked Evanilson on the pitch for the assist, I’ll thank him again, he’s a very dedicated player, he was unlucky with the injury, but now he’s back and I’m very happy that he’s taking part in goals and helping us.”
