Group D is one of the closest in the Champions League this season with just three points separating top from bottom. Currently leading the way are Sporting CP who won their opening two matches against Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur to take control of the group.

However, they let some of that control slip last week, falling 4-1 to Marseille in France, their fourth defeat of the season across all competitions. While Sporting are top of their Champions League group, things aren’t going as well in the Primeira Liga with the 2020/21 champions already nine points behind leaders Benfica having suffered a poor start to the campaign.

Back to the Champions League, sitting bottom of Group D are Marseille but they could overtake Sporting CP with victory in Portugal and could even go top if the other game ends in a draw. It wasn’t a good start to the group for Igor Tudor’s men, with back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Eintracht Frankfurt – but as mentioned they did turn things around with an emphatic win over Sporting last week.

That win was more like what we have seen from Marseille in Ligue 1 this season, with Tudor’s side currently third, three points behind leaders PSG. Marseille had been unbeaten in the league up until the weekend too, finally losing their streak to Ajaccio which saw them miss the chance to move level on points with PSG.

Sporting CP v Marseille: Match Stats

Marseille’s Nuno Tavares, formerly of Benfica and on loan from Arsenal, has made 36 progressive carries in the Champions League so far this season. Among all full-backs on Theo Hernandez (41) has made more than the Portuguese defender.

Last week’s game was a barnstormer with four goals scored in the opening 45 minutes, three from Marseille and one by Sporting.

Sporting CP v Marseille: Team news

Antonio Adan is suspended for Sporting after his red card in the 4-1 defeat to Marseille last week, with Franco Israel set to replace him. The hosts are also without Pedro Porro, Jovane Cabral, Daniel Braganca and Luis Neto.

Jonathan Clauss had to come off in the first half last week due to injury and missed the defeat to Ajaccio over the weekend but he is expected to return for the trip to Portugal. Matteo Guendouzi is also expected back, but it is unclear whether he will start or just return to the bench at best. Sead Kolasinac is out.
