Chelsea had Antony interest pre-Ajax move, former scout reveals

Manchester United were undergoing a summer of change in the past few months with Erik ten Hag coming in as new manager, while a number of big names departed. For a large part of the transfer window Man Utd fans were frustrated by the lack of action at the club but things picked up in the latter stages and culminated with the signing of Antony.

The Red Devils had been chasing Antony all summer but Ajax were not going to let the Brazilian go easily, eventually selling him to Man Utd for £82m in the final days of the window. Antony made his debut at the first available opportunity after being registered, starting and scoring in the 3-1 win over Arsenal in the Premier League to extend Man Utd’s winning run.

But things could have been so much different if Chelsea had their way. According to the club’s former head scout, Chelsea had been interested in signing Antony before he joined Ajax, having spotting him in the youth ranks of Brazil. Allowing him to develop at Ajax the plan was then for Chelsea to sign him from the Dutch club, though that of course did not materialise.

“Together with Hans van der Zee we saw him for the first time at Brazil’s youth ranks and we were both charmed by him. That was a few years ago, just before he went to Ajax,” Piet de Visser told VoetbalNieuws.

“I thought he had to make an intermediate step and then Hans suggested Ajax. And then we would take him right from Ajax. We couldn’t get him, I would have wanted him.

“He’s a boy with poison in his backside. He sometimes crosses the line, but he comes from the favela, doesn’t he?”

Scoreline prediction: Sheriff 0-2 Man Utd
