The reigning European champions have already made a flawless start to their continental campaign, laying down an impressive early marker. Real Madrid currently top Group F with three wins from three, most recently taking down Shakhtar Donetsk, who welcome them to Poland on Tuesday night.

Carlo Ancelotti has not been messing about in 2022/23, with his side winning 11 of their 12 games in all competitions (drawing the other), including the Super Cup, Champions League and La Liga. He will want to take that form into this return fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk, who are eyeing up an upset.

Igor Jovicevic’s men, likewise have made a solid start to the Champions League, thrashing RB Leipzig 4-1 on matchday one, before drawing 1-1 with Celtic and just losing out to Real last week. Despite that 2-1 loss, the closeness of the contest should give the Ukrainian side some confidence for Round Two.

Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid: Match Stats

Karim Benzema has registered more shots on target than any other player since the start of last season’s Champions League (27), so he will be fired up for this contest. In fact, the Frenchman’s next goal in the Champions League would be his 75th for Real. The only two players who have previously bagged 75 goals for a single club in the competition are Lionel Messi for Barcelona (120) and Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid (105).

Mykhailo Mudryk has played like a man possessed for Shakhtar in Europe so far. He has been directly involved in four goals in three appearances for them in the Champions League this season. Since 2003/04, the only Ukrainian player with more combined goals and assists in a single campaign for the club in the competition is Junior Moraes in 2018/19 (five).

Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid: Team news

Viktor Kornienko is not expected back for the ‘hosts’ until the New Year after he ruptured his ACL in August, which is Jovicevic only major concern. For Real, Thibaut Courtois is currently sidelined, so Ukrainian Andriy Lunin will continue to deputise in his absence, while Benzema should be fit enough to shake off a minor knock.
