Scotland will have qualification on their minds when they host Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on Saturday evening at 7.45pm (UK time).

Steve Clarke’s side will be looking for revenge after Republic of Ireland demolished them 3-0 in the reverse fixture in Dublin back in June. Goals from Alan Browne, Troy Parrott and Michael Obafemi inflicted Scotland’s only defeat in the competition so far this campaign and they will be determined to put things right on home soil.

The Tartan Army have turned Hampden Park into a fortress in the Nations League, winning six and drawing one of their seven home games in the competition, conceding just three times and keeping five clean sheets since their inaugural game back in 2018.

      Scotland team news

After already having to do without captain Andy Robertson, it was more bad news on the full-back front for Scotland in their 3-0 win over Ukraine on Thursday. Everton’s summer signing Nathan Patterson was forced off in the first half, eventually being taken away on a stretcher with manager Steve Clarke saying:

“It doesn’t look too good when he goes off on a stretcher. He obviously felt something on his leg, we’ll just wait and see what the medics say and how it pans out. Hopefully, it’s not too serious and hopefully he’s not out too long.”

      Republic of Ireland team news

Robbie Brady returns to squad for the first time in 18 months after some impressive performances at left wing-back for Preston in the Championship this season, while there are also recalls for Andrew Omobamidele, who is back from from injury and Callum O’Dowda, who has been directly involved in four goals in seven league starts for Cardiff in 2022/23.

Scott Hogan and Chiedozie Ogbene will fight out for a starting spot after scoring 10 league goals between them so far this campaign, while they also have the likes of Troy Parrott, Callum Robinson and Michael Obafemi looking to make their marks on the international stage.

Scoreline prediction: Scotland 2-0 Republic of Ireland
