River Plate vs Internacional match preview:
River Plate were initially drawn into Group D alongside Fluminense, Sporting Cristal and The Strongest subsequently picking up 10 points (three wins and one draw) across six matches. Although they ended up level on points with Fluminense, an inferior goal difference saw them finish as runners-up. Lucas Beltrán finished as their leading scorer with four goals. The club from Buenos Aires are four-time Copa Libertadores winners, however, they were eliminated at this stage by Vélez Sarsfield last season.
Internacional, meanwhile, topped Group B undefeated having picked up three wins and three draws. Eduardo Coudet’s side finished one point ahead of Nacional with Independiente Medellín and Metropolitanos ending up in third and fourth, respectively. Allan Patrick would register three of their 10 goals. This year marks Internacional’s third consecutive round of 16 appearance, and they’ll be looking to reach the quarter-finals, something they last managed in 2018/19 which came nearly a decade after the second of their two Copa Libertadores successes.
