The Blues will be through to the round of 16 if they win, or if they draw and AC Milan wins. Chelsea will be confirmed in first place if they win and Dinamo Zagreb do not. As for Salzburg, they will be through to the round of 16 if they win and Milan do not.

The only previous European meeting between Red Bull Salzburg and Chelsea came in this season’s reverse fixture on matchday two, a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea have only played two away European matches in Austria before, losing 1-0 at Wiener Sport-Club in November 1965 in the Fairs Cup and drawing 1-1 against FK Austria Wien in November 1994 in the Cup Winners’ Cup.

RB Salzburg, meanwhile, are winless in all seven of their European matches against English teams (two draws and five losses), failing to beat Blackburn Rovers (one draw and one loss), Manchester City (two losses), Liverpool (two losses) and Chelsea (one draw). It is the most they’ve faced teams from a single nation without defeating them in major European competition.

RB Salzburg team news

No fewer than 10 players are missing for Salzburg through injury. Bryan Okoh, Ousmane Diakité, Samson Tijani are long-term absentees. They are joined in the physio room by Andreas Ulmer, Luka Sucic, Nicolás Capaldo, Justin Omoregie, Dijon Kameri, Fernando and Sekou Koita. That being said, the average age of Salzburg’s starting XI’s in the Champions League this season is 22 years and 346 days; the youngest of any team in the competition this term.

Noah Okafor should again lead their line. Only Erling Haaland (8) has scored more Champions League goals for Salzburg than him (6). The Swiss striker has netted three times in the competition this term, and he could set a new season-best total in European competition if he gets on the scoresheet here. However, they’ve scored exactly one goal in each of their last seven games in the Champions League – only one team have ever had a longer run of scoring a single goal in the competition, with Olympiakos doing so in 10 in a row in a run ending in November 2005.

Chelsea team news

Wesley Fofana, Reece James and N’Golo Kanté are the only players ruled out for Chelsea this week. In their absence, the Blues are seeking to win three Champions League games in a row by a 2+ goal margin since October-November 2013 under José Mourinho (3). Set to play a key role is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has scored in his last two Champions League appearances for Chelsea (two goals), while the last player to find the net in three consecutive appearances in the competition for them was Willian in December 2015.

Their chances of achieving this goal are strengthened by the fact Chelsea has allowed the fewest opposition passes per defensive action (8.3) in the Champions League this season, highlighting the difficulties that their opponents have had in managing possession against them.

Scoreline prediction: RB Salzburg 1-2 Chelsea
