PSV v SK Sturm Graz match preview

PSV and Sturm Graz go head-to-head in their first leg of their Champions League qualifying match this week, knowing what’s at stake.

After finishing runners-up to champions Ajax last season, PSV will have to overcome a tough test against the Austrian Bundesliga runners-up if they are to make it to the group stages of the Champions League for the first time since the 2018/19 campaign, when they finished bottom of their group behind Barcelona, Tottenham and Inter, picking up just two points and failing to win a game.

Peter Bosz’s side have been knocked out in the Champions League qualifying rounds in each of the last two seasons after back-to-back aggregate defeats to Benfica (1-2) in 2021/22 and Rangers (2-3) in 2022/23 and will be wanting to put things right this time around.

Opponents Sturm Graz, however, will be no pushovers as they look to qualify for Europe’s top competition for the first time in 23 years. Having being knocked out of the group stages of the Europa league in the last two seasons, the Austrian side are hopeful they can go one better this time around.

If they do qualify, this will be just the fourth time they have played in the Champions League proper after making the group stages in three consecutive seasons in 1998/99, 1999/00 and 2000/01.

The winner of this tie will face either Rangers or Servette in the final qualifying round.
