Los Blancos opened up a 15-point gap at the top of the table at the weekend as they came from 2-0 down to beat title rivals Sevilla, with Karim Benzema scoring an injury-time winner. Barcelona also remain 15 points behind Real Madrid and have a game in hand, but it is only a matter of time until Carlo Ancelotti’s men seal the title. Hosts Osasuna, meanwhile, are sitting pretty in ninth and are all-but mathematically safe while also perhaps too far behind to challenge for Europe.
Carlo Ancelotti speaks on Marco Asensio’s future
There is a lot of positivity around the Santiago Bernabeu right now, with the La Liga title almost wrapped up and a Champions League semi-final to come, but attention is already turning to summer transfer window. While Real Madrid will be looking to add Kylian Mbappe to their squad, partnering the Frenchman with Ballon d’Or favourite Karim Benzema, Los Blancos will also have to manage outgoings.
One player whose future is currently in doubt is Marco Asensio, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool, AC Milan and Arsenal in recent days alone. And Real Madrid boss Ancelotti has admitted he is unsure what the future will bring for Asensio,
“I don’t know what will will happen regarding his future,” Ancelotti told Rai Radio 1.
“I think he is talking to the club to renew his contract, but I can only speak about his technical qualities.”
Asensio, now 26, has played 36 games across all competitions so far this season, scoring 10 goals and recording one assist. However, of his 36 appearances, just 19 have come from the start and he has found himself behind Federico Valverde as Ancelotti’s right-wing option of late.
“He’s a player with extraordinary quality,” he added.
“He had a serious knee injury which left him out for a long time and with a slow rehabilitation. He’s an important player who has helped us.”
