Newcastle vs Villarreal match preview

The second round of matches in the inaugural Sela Cup get underway today at St.James’ Park, with both sides still able to lift the trophy. As usual, three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, but unlike other cup competitions, an extra point is awarded for each goal scored.

As it stands, Newcastle currently top the mini-table with five points after their 2-0 victory over Fiorentina yesterday afternoon thanks to a goal in either half from Miggy Almiron and Alexander Isak. Villarreal meanwhile, sit on two points alongside Nice after both teams played out a 1-1 draw, with Morgan Sanson cancelling out Ben Brereton Diaz’s opener, after the former Blackburn man had scored the rebound after missing his initial penalty.

This will be the Toon Army’s final pre-season game before the Premier League returns next week and it will be good final test, as Eddie Howe’s side prepare for a campaign that sees them return to the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2001/02.
