Newcastle team news
Howe deployed a heavily-rotated side in Wednesday’s EFL Cup third round win over Crystal Palace, so expect the likes of Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson to walk straight back into the starting XI this weekend. The Newcastle boss remains without Alexander Isak, Ryan Fraser, Matt Ritchie, Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett through injury, but Miguel Almiron is fit after going off injured last weekend. Fears were allayed after he featured as a second-half substitute in midweek.
The Paraguayan’s injury swerve will come as a huge boost to Howe given his form this season. In just 14 games, Almiron has hit eight goals, which culminated in him winning October’s Player of the Month award. It’s quite the narrative-shift from a player once considered to be too inconsistent for the Premier League, a perception that made him the butt of a joke from Jack Grealish during Manchester City’s title parade last season.
Asked back in May what inspired City’s final-day comeback against Aston Villa to confirm the title, Grealish responded: “There were two. Riyad [Mahrez], take him off the pitch, as soon as possible. He played like [Miguel] Almiron.
“Secondly, he [pointing at Bernardo Silva], he has been so good this season but get him off the pitch.”
Less than half-a-year later, Almiron has now responded to Grealish’s indirect dig, quashing the notion that his improved form has been fuelled by the City forward’s brazen mockery.
“No, I don’t think anything that Jack [Grealish] said has a bearing on the great form and the performances we have been showing as a group of players,” Almiron said.
“Jack’s a great player, first and foremost, and I wish him all the best, but this success is down to work, more work, and even more hard work.”
Chelsea team news
For the visitors, Potter is once again unable to call upon N’Golo Kante, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell and Reece James, all of whom remain sidelined until after the World Cup. Kepa Arrizabalaga is also nursing a slight foot injury, which means Edouard Mendy retains his starting berth between the sticks.
